Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis

What is rheumatoid arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, systemic autoimmune disease that causes a chronic inflammation, resulting in the progressive destruction of the joints. It causes varying degrees of deformity and  functional disability.

Although its cause is unknown, autoimmunity (the immune system mistakenly attacks its own cells) plays a key role in the way the disease progresses, becoming a chronic condition.

What are the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis generally affects articulations of the joints, knees, fingers and ankles. It usually begins slowly, with a mild joint pain, stiffness and fatigue.

Joint symptoms can include:

  • Morning joint stiffness.
  • Joint pain felt on both sides of the body
  • Limitation in range of motion of the joints, which might become deformed.

Other symptoms:

  • Chest pain when breathing (pleurisy)
  • Dryness of the mouth and eyes (Sjogren's syndrome)
  • Eye burning, itching and discharge
  • Nodules under the skin (usually a sign of more severe disease)
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning in the hands and feet.

What is the best treatment?
Integrative Medicine is about combining conventional medicine with alternative or complementary medicines that have been scientifically validated. Based on these concepts, in Clínica Omega Zeta we combine treatments from both worlds. Although rheumatoid arthritis generally has no cure, homeopathy, acupuncture and relaxation techniques, together with the use of some nutrients, supplements and plants have been proved effective in slowing the progression of disease and can relieve swelling and pain.

Clínica Omega Zeta medical team will advise you on the treatment more suitable to your medical condition.
